Christian Aid Workers Escape Afghanistan

The eight Christian aid workers held captive by the Taliban are safe in Pakistan, CBS reported tonight.

A U.S. military helicopter flew the group, including Americans Heather Mercer and Dayna Curry, out of Afghanistan, CBS said. The eight were reported on their way from a Pakistani military base to Islamabad, where relatives await.

U.S. officials who have spoken to the freed workers by phone say they are in good condition, according to CBS.

Details were sketchy. A report by the Associated Press said the eight Westerners were "freed as a result of military action;" CBS said Northern Alliance rebels rescued them; one report said the Taliban claimed to have released them.

The Associated Press reported Tuesday that Taliban forces took the eight with them when fleeing Kabul as the U.S.-backed rebels advanced on the capital.

"They were very happy, because they thought they would be released," Abdul Raouf, one of the guards at the squalid prison where the eight were held, said Tuesday.

The guards said they were sad to see the aid workers taken away.

"We liked them. They were good people. I think they will be OK because the Taliban had treated them very good," said Raouf.

The workers, including four Germans and two Australians, are employees of Shelter Now International, a Christian organization in Germany. They have been held since Aug. 3 on charges of trying to convert Muslims, a serious offense in Islamic Afghanistan. They have said the charges were false.
