* 17:43 ET After Hours Movers : Prices vs 4 pm ET close... AMAT -1.81 accelerating its losses in late trading after its fourth quarter earnings report. Semiconductor equipment sector peers NVLS -1.15 and KLAC -1.27 widening their respective losses as well. CYBX -0.50 selling off now on its second quarter earnings report while AGIL -1.24 is getting sold off as well.

* 16:07 ET Applied Materials (AMAT) 40.71 -0.09: -- Update -- Reports Q4 net of $0.03 a share, $0.01 worse than the Multex consensus, vs yr-ago EPS of $0.77. Sales fell 57% to $1.26 bln (mean $1.255 bln). New orders down 69% to $1.1 bln (Salomon Smith Barney est was $1.2 bln).

* 16:16 ET Applied Materials Reaction : Prices vs 4 pm ET close... Initial reaction to the AMAT report appears to be favorable. AMAT +0.50 and chip equipment sector peers NVLS +0.15 and KLAC +0.10 also edging higher.

* 16:54 ET Applied Materials (AMAT) 40.71 -0.09: -- Update -- On call, company calls Fiscal year just ended (Oct) "The Perfect Storm."...Company will be providing guidance in a few minutes...stay tuned...stock at 39.72.

* 17:25 ET After Hours Indications : The late session tone is deteriorating somewhat as AMAT's conference call progresses. S&P futures at 1142, trade one point below fair value while the Nasdaq 100 after hours indicator is lower by 7.5 points.

* 17:40 ET Applied Materials (AMAT) 40.71 -0.09: -- Update -- Salomon Smith Barney is out with a note after the earnings release. JanQ guidance provided on call was in line with Salomon's expectations after it read the release. However Salomon expected the company to indicate on the call that JanQ would represent the cyclical bottom. Management did not go that far...stock at 38.96.
