<<DirecTV and DISH both give them away now, with free or lower-priced service too. >>

I'd be careful about Dish. Had it installed last January. At the time of installation I mentioned my home was heavily surrounded by trees which might affect the reception. The installer replied"we don't have that problem".
Came April when the trees leafed out, no reception. It took 2 months before they would send out a tech.
In the meantime I replaced parts and splitters for them with no avail. In May when the tech agreed he could not fix it I canceled the service. I was billed $240.00(to my credit card) for premature cancellation of the 1 year contract even though they could not supply a signal. It took months to get that reconciled. Last week they billed me $398.00 (again on my credit card)for equipment I had returned in June and had faxed them the UPS signed receipt numbers and had gone over the problem with their reps months before and had been told it would be removed from my account.
I wait to see what happens. I have never dealt with a lousier outfit for service in my life. They make the IRS look efficient. One rep had the temerity to tell me, when I told her I would not pay the disconnect fee,
that"it is not our fault" you can't get reception and "we don't make refunds".

PS Read the fine print in the contract....
