lorne,
IMO nobody with a brain still thinks that Arafat is either capable or willing to put down terrorists. Just about two weeks ago, Arafat told everybody in the American and Israeli governments that he had a certain terrorist locked up. Two days later, the Israelis killed him -- while he was driving around in a jeep. Perhaps Arafat might make sporadic shows of effort to please the US State Dept, who are always easily pleased where Arafat is concerned. To think that Powell wants to drop the week's quiet demand because a seven day cease fire is too much to ask of Arafat. A week!

Arafat started this idiotic intifada because if he hadn't, the Palestinian guns would have turned on him. That's still true unless he can produce a big win, which Sharon is determined to deny him. So the intifada and the lies will continue.
