Australia's soccer team arrives in Uruguay to hostile
reception

November 21, 2001

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) -- Australia's soccer team arrived in
Uruguay on Wednesday to a hostile reception, getting into a fight with an
angry crowd of hometown fans after clearing customs.

Witnesses at the airport said about 20 Uruguay fans waited for the
players to arrive from a layover in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

When the Australians emerged from customs, fans crowded around them
and shouted insults. One fan threw a punch that struck an Australian
player on the shoulder.

After the attack, security separated players from fans and led the
Australians one by one to an airport exit.

Australia beat Uruguay 1-0 Tuesday in the first leg of a home-and-home,
total-goals series for the final spot in next year's World Cup. The second
leg is Sunday, the last of 778 qualifiers for the tournament in Japan and
South Korea.
