The tragedy in India was no different before and after the appearance of Ghandi. The tragedy was British oppression and racism.>>>>

In what way was the "tragedy (of India) British oppression and racism" after independence from Britain?

India has reaped tremendous benefits from the colonial era. The British brought democratic principles, a system of laws, freedom of expression and widespread use of English which has allowed India to more and more take its place among the technological leaders of the world. The same goes for other colonies such as Hong Kong.

In colonies where the English presence was less pervasive or of shorter duration, such as in the Arab world, there is precious little democracy, freedom of expression, technological advancement, or a legal system ensuring individual rights.

One need only compare the relative merits of places like Hong Kong and Mumbai (which have a bright future) with places like Cairo or Baghdad (backwards and filled with despair) to see what I am saying is true.
