>>The solution is not to corrupt our judicial tradition by making bin Laden the star of a new Star Chamber. The solution is to turn his cave into his crypt.<<

Hmmm. Safire doesn't seem to have a problem with executing bin Laden without benefit of a trial, just with giving him a trial that's different from that given United States citizens. Weird, IMO.

Hi Snowshoe, odd article by Saffire, it's like he changed his mind halfway thru...

"What do we do if Osama bin Laden gives himself up? A proper trial like that Israel afforded Adolf Eichmann, it is feared, would give the terrorist a global propaganda platform. "

Nonsense. There's nothing holding his platform back now, or in the future, except common sense - it only works through schools of the young and ignorant where it is not questioned. The cure is to cross-examine any such beliefs. A court would reveal that crap to be the ignorant nonsense that it is, and his conviction will send a message to the rest of the world. If secret messages are feared testimony can be held off-camera.

"... it would be likely to result in widespread hostage-taking by his followers to protect him from the punishment he deserves."

More bullshit. All hostage-taking, bomb-throwing, hijackings, poisonings etc have ALL been tried, and are being tried. Does anyone think the Taleban is "holding back" something for later? Not a chance. The Taliban are soon to be toast, and have, or will have tried everything they can lay their hands on.

Bottom line - Kill the terrorists, try those that surrender, keep everything public except true military secrets, and be prepared to justify those later in writing; cut the crap.

This secret tiptoeing around is what got us into this mess in the first place - we had no business sticking our finger in that light socket, now it's time to pull it out.

But that's too simple
