Yousef, Timing, Timing, Timing. UMC has the advantage that their fab is ready to roll and the AMD fab is in the design stage. Remember that fabs in these foreign climes are cheaper to make and cheaper to operate, Sure the equipment costs the same, but construction costs a lot less and semi skilled labour is a lot cheaper.
Intel has had the luxury of high margins and so has made many costly USA fabs. How will these economic factors affect the compeetition between AMD/Intel?
UMC might well be able to make the parts cheaper than AMD can and sooner too.
