His analytical powers are not keen.......In Vietnam, we were trying to pacify the countryside, against a guerrilla insurgency supported by outside powers. The regime(s) we supported were unstable, never popular, and incapable of mounting a vigorous campaign on their own behalf. Additionally, we took the invasion of North Vietnam off the table, and allowed the Ho Chi Minh trail to operate for an unconsionably long time, without disruption.......In Afghanistan, we were trying to topple an unpopular regime with no credible external support and large- scale, armed opposition capable of mounting a land campaign with our aid. Of course we would like to promote stability, but that is not our primary goal. We have achieved most of our primary goals in the country, although there is mopping up to do...........
