Worker dies in cut-up machine at Pilgrim's Pride plant
by Joshua Lipsky on 11/15/01 for www.meatingplace.com

A maintenance worker died Monday after he was caught in a cut-up machine at a Pilgrim's Pride processing plant in Marshville, N.C., according to reports.

Favian Paz, 23, worked for a Greensboro, N.C.-based contracting company that provides maintenance work for the plant, according to Marshville Police Chief Mike Gaddy. Co-workers reportedly found Paz's body around 8 p.m. Gaddy added that Paz was cleaning the cut-up machine when he apparently got caught in the equipment.

“We're unsure how he got caught up,” Gaddy said. “We don't know if he fell into it or if his clothes got grabbed.”

Police do not suspect foul play. Gaddy also said that an inspector with the Occupational Safety and Heath Administration visited the plant after the accident and found no problems with the machine.

Ray Atkinson, a spokesperson for Pilgrim's Pride, said the company is conducting its own investigation of the death.
