It's a misunderstanding which is quite common for people who write about imode without having actually used imode personally (at present you need to be a fluent reader of Japanese language to use and understand real-life imode). I live in Tokyo and use imode everyday - but I definitely don't "browse the web on my credit-card-sized screen".
