Hi Pearly_Button; Re Socrates and war. I never read his works (it's sitting on a shelf somewhere), so all I can recall is his demonstration that avoiding panic can save your life during a rout. It had to do with his forming up some companions during an Athenian defeat. Soldiers who ran were all killed, but he and his companions massed shields, retreated slowly, and lived. Funny thing is that that particular lesson does not apply to modern combat. *Modern weapons are primarily offensive, rather than defensive in nature*, so those who show the least fear (by shooting back, for instance) attract the most fire. Cowardice is more useful on a modern battlefield. Either hide in your hole or if that won't work, run like hell. The enemy will have to take care of the brave guys before they bother with the cowards. I would hope that this illustrates the nature of the fear that soldiers have to face. It's a miracle that anyone actually has the courage to face the enemy. Now you've got me interested in cracking one of those books (assuming I can find it). -- Carl
