I don't know if I am the only one who has questioned some of the recent data releases, such as retail sales. Another measure of the consumer that is not as volatile as other data series is given below.
Consumer (Individual) Loans at all Commercial Banks
Seasonally Adjusted
2001.01 545.8
2001.02 545.9
2001.03 544.6
2001.04 548.4
2001.05 552.6
2001.06 551.1
2001.07 549.0
2001.08 546.5
2001.09 546.4
2001.10 549.2

This indicates Sept 11 did not alter major consumer activity as much as other series imply.
