this week's book was about Slovak steel workers in Pittsburg. CB, my grandparents arrived from Slovakia around 1910. My mother's father was a steelworker at Bethlehem Steel. I'm a blue-eyed blond, but they're were places my family couldn't live, clubs we could not join, and, when I was in college, sororities that couldn't take me. I didn't become "white" until well into the civil rights movement in the sixties. When my grandparents arrived, they were duly checked in at Ellis Island. That's why I was surprised at your comments about borders. Karen
