With proadband access and always-on, the life span of a pc will get shorter, limitted by the fans' life span. I have had to replace three computers at home in the last six years due to fan clogging up by the dust they suck in. Nowadays with fan in the power supply, fan in the case chasis, fan on the processor, and fan on the video card, there are just more chances of mechanical failure.
