“What about the Taliban?” Would the Taliban phenomenon pass from the scene just as it had emerged and, within a short time, overwhelmed most of Afghanistan?

In answering, one is inclined to agree with President Musharraf that “their days are numbered”, considering the current US-sponsored crusade against terrorism with which they have been inextricably linked and which has been responsible for their rout. The only caveat is that, given their fanaticism, the committed among them would not sit back and take their defeat lightly, but resort to guerrilla warfare.

However, a large part of the Pashtun population would heave a sigh of relief. The attraction of peaceful conditions, which rallied the people around the Taliban, has long been overshadowed by the unbearable conformism to which they were subjected. Even going by general Afghan standards born of lack of education, the religious orthodoxy the Taliban enforced was not to the liking of the people at large.
Their presence in the tribal belt would have ominous repercussions for Pakistan.

Our joining hands with the coalition have naturally turned them hostile to us. We should be prepared to face attempts at sabotage within Pakistan, either directly committed by them or with the help of Afghan refugees dispersed all over the country. One hopes Pakistani Taliban supporters would not exacerbate the situation and keep the interests of the country uppermost . The situation calls for utmost vigilance.
