(Nasdaq: GTNR) approved the board of directors' recommendation to change the company's name to ClearOne Communications Inc. at Gentner's annual shareholders' meeting yesterday. The name change will take effect Jan. 1, 2002, at which time the company will begin trading under the symbol "CLRO" on the Nasdaq stock market. Gentner's conferencing products will continue to be branded under the Gentner name. According to Frances Flood, president and chief executive officer of Gentner, the ClearOne name more effectively communicates the company's focus on conferencing, is more marketable to its target audiences, and better reflects the company's new image and growth objectives. "The company today is dramatically different than when it began in 1981, and the new name more accurately depicts all areas of our business," she said. A significant difference in the company is its increased emphasis on conferencing services, a division that experienced revenue growth of 98 percent in the most recent fiscal year. "There is great potential for continued growth in our services business, with a market opportunity of about $2 billion according to Frost & Sullivan," said Flood. "Services are sold directly to the end user, and it is important that the company's name effectively communicates the nature of our business to that audience." Flood also stressed that the company's conferencing products will continue to be sold under the Gentner name. "The Gentner name has tremendous brand equity within our distribution channel," she said. "Our channel partners equate Gentner with top-quality conferencing products supported by a dedicated, responsive technical services team. It is important that we continue to leverage that name going forward in the appropriate channels."
