Art Rock - former Board member and original Intel VC - has observed that the cost of producing a "modern" wafer fab increases by 2X every 3 or 4 years (Rock's law). Won't be too many companies that will be able to afford them in a few years !

Maybe it'll get down to only 1 company that can afford it? We can already see another company that realizes it can't keep up the pace and is planning to outsource at least some production to a foundry. With the inevitable performance drop and price increase it can't stay competitive for long.
