In spite of the fact that I favor all Taliban being exterminated, there would seem to be some merit to their claim that these women had religious motives.

Perhaps but even so I don't think they should have been prosecuted, even if by "religious motives" you mean that they had the idea that maybe they could influence a few people to convert. If you merely mean that they were inspired to help people because of their religious convictions then I don't see how that would even violate the Taliban's laws.

Am watching live press conf with two American "Aid Workers". If I did not know better I might think I was watching Sat Night Live -- Airhead City.

I've had one finger on the mute button all day today. The TV's on in the background when I'm on the computer. As soon as I hear their voices, my ears start to hurt. I can't wait until their ten minutes is over.
