Singapore shares hold gains on fund buying

sg.news.yahoo.com

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore shares were off two-month peaks but still higher by midday on Friday as Singapore Airlines and technology stocks like Venture Manufacturing climbed on fund buying.

Market analysts believe funds, driven by interest rate cut injections of liquidity, have been buying index-linked stocks as they make changes to asset allocations, possibly ahead of changes to the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) indices.

"There's actually been a lot of talk of passive funds being active, particularly in the United States. And it's possible that you can relate this to MSCI changes that are due at the month end," said Andrew Fung, head of Asia-Pacific Research at Rabobank.
