E-Trade will join ranks of credit card issuers
Ron Leuty
Credit card issuers are as hot with investors as their solicitations are with consumers. So what does E-Trade Group Inc. want to do? Enter the credit card business, of course.

"We will be in the credit card business in (the first quarter)," Mitchell Caplan, head of the Menlo Park brokerage company's bank unit, told analysts in a conference call Oct. 10.

That could mean an acquisition or a partnership with an existing issuer, Caplan said. "Over the long term, we will own a credit card company," he says. "We think we can manage credit card cycles."
