I think the 74 minutes was a different plane, here is another story from a Santo Domingo paper:

Airplance returns due to turbine problems.
(Another American Airlines plane, with 80 passengeres, made an emergency landing in Cancun, Mexico.)

An American Airlines Boeing 757, flght 422, headed for Miami, suffered a delay of more than two hours due to engine turbine problems when it was taxing before takeoff.

Ultima Hora learned that the airplane suffered a mechanical problem and had to return until mechanics fixed it. The airplane will next take off at noon. The Boeing was supposed to take off this morning at 8:15.
The unexpected delay created a panic among the passengers, some of whom canceled the flight and returned home. Those who decided to make the trip remained behind closed areas around noon, waiting for American to replace the airplane.
Yesterday morning, another plane, flight 680, also flying to Miami, was delayed due to mechanical problems. It was a similar plane to flight the A300 airbus that crashed ...

It was not determined immediately how many passengers were on the delayed plane Thrusday morning, but an airport official said that "there were many people on board."

American Airlines has not offered any information.
