Ben-Eliezer: We'll hit back hard if attacked by Iraq
By The Associated Press

JERUSALEM - Israel is not taking part in the war in Afghanistan but would hit back if Iraq attacks, Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said in an interview published today.

Considering the prospect of Iraq attacking Israel if the US-led war against terrorism spreads there, Ben-Eliezer told the Ma'ariv daily, "then there would be no choice, we would have to respond."

In the 1991 Gulf war, Iraq fired 39 Scud missiles at Israel, but under intense US pressure, Israel did not retaliate. The United States was concerned that an Israeli counterstrike would break up its coalition, including Arab states, confronting Iraq after its 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
