In my old batik and tie-dying days, and I've dyed a lot of stuff, I use to wear rubber gloves during the dying stage(mostly because it's sort of embarrassing to go out with blue or other assorted colored hands. I'd been under the impression onec they were diluted into water they pose much less risk to skin absorbtion.

I can't recall ever using hand protection for mixing ceramic glazes or clay.
