What can you say about the effects of wake turbulence?

It is a little known phenomenon. We know that external factors, like the weather or the direction of the wind, can have major influence on these turbulences. This is why we have safety margins, which in theory guarantee a takeoff without problems. The theory of wake turbulence to explain the Airbus catastrophe seems rather strange.

Can't these turbulences break a plane apart?

There have been cases where the passengers were violently thrown horizontally, from the left towards the right or vice versa. But I don't remember this causing such damage. The passengers might be shaken, but the pilot always regains control. In this case, we are concerned about the loss of altitude, then the left engine, then the right engine. This sequence of structural failures seems incredible if one theorizes wake turbulence as the only cause.
