Taliban might pull out of Kandahar

November 16, 2001 Posted: 1:20 p.m. EST (1820 GMT)

(CNN) -- Reports indicate that a top aide to Osama bin Laden may be dead, the U.S. secretary of defense said on Friday, as the Afghan Islamic Press reported that Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar has decided to withdraw the Taliban from their base in Kandahar.

Speaking at a Chicago, Illinois, news conference, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said he has heard credible reports that Mohammed Atef -- one of the highest-ranking members of al Qaeda -- has been killed in a U.S.-led airstrike.

Atef's daughter is married to one of bin Laden's sons and the al Qaeda leader is frequently spoken of as a possible successor to bin Laden.

Atef is believed to be responsible for supervising the training of operatives. Prosecutors say he provided military training and assistance in 1993 to Somali tribes who violently opposed the United Nations' intervention in Somalia's civil unrest. In an October 1993 battle, Somali tribesmen killed 18 U.S. Army Rangers. (Full story)

In northern Afghanistan, thousands of Taliban soldiers, armed with about 100 artillery pieces and 60 tanks, were fighting the Northern Alliance for control of Konduz.

A senior Northern Alliance military official told CNN that his group would give safe passage out of the country to pro-Taliban Pakistani, Chechen and Arab fighters if the fighters surrender their weapons. (Full story)

WS - The Saudi financed "Schools of Hate" must now be dismantled in Pakistan, Culver City and everywhere that this pest has been planted. These so called schools aka "Madrassahs" are just pepetuating another crop of hate filled maniacs and they must be closed down. While we are at it we should insist on Churches being allowed in Saudi.

Best,

L
