IDF kills Palestinian trying to infiltrate Gaza Strip settlement

By Amos Harel, Ha'aretz Correspondent and Agencies

Israel Defense Forces troops shot and killed an armed Palestinian who was part of a group of trying to infiltrate the Nisanit settlement in the northern Gaza Strip before dawn Friday morning. An IDF spokesman said that IDF soldiers assigned to guard Nisanit opened fire after seeing the group of armed Palestinians approaching the settlement. The other Palestinians in the group managed to escape from the gunfire.

Three mortars were fired Friday morning from the Gaza Strip at towns inside Israel. Palestinians also opened fire on an IDF base next to the Erez checkpoint. There were no injuries in any of the incidents.

A bomb exploded next to an IDF jeep at the Karni-Netzarim junction. The explosion did not cause any injuries, but the jeep was damaged. Shots were also fired Thursday night at an IDF base next to the Neve Dekalim settlement and four fragmentary grenades were thrown at an IDF post in the Gaza Strip on the Israel-Egypt border, next to Rafah. Again, there were no injuries.

The IDF prepared Thursday night for a reduction in the number of troops Area A in the West Bank city of Tul Karm. Military sources said that the change was being carried out for operational reasons, adding that they were hopeful that if the quiet continues in the region it will be possible to withdraw completely from the Palestinian-controlled city next week.

On Thursday, Defense Minister Bejamin Ben-Eliezer authorized a series of moves intended to ease the conditions on the Palestinian population in the territories, to coincide with the beginning of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan. Among the changes, Palestinians will be able to travel in the West Bank, roadblocks will be removed and roads will be open to traffic. Hours of operation will be extended at the Erez crossing, the Rafah checkpoint and at crossings used for the delivery of goods. The fishing area in the Mediterranean Sea will be extended to 12 miles from the Gaza port. Before the holiday of Id al Feter, which marks the end of Ramadan, 30 Palestinian prisoners will be released according to recommendations from the Prisons Authority and the IDF. In addition, visits from families of Palestinian prisoners will again be permitted

Yes; and of course there was another massacre at the Sabra refugee camp in 1985 that got no attention at all, there being no Israelis in the neighborhood at the time. A cynic could believe that concern for the Palestinians is not a prime factor here.
