You should try the San Juan Islands in Washington before you condemn the West out of hand.

Yes, the ocean is wonderful. The last couple of summers I have gone to Long Beach Island, in New Jersey, which is very family oriented and has few motels, mostly cottages. There is a park at one tip that is very beautiful, with an antique lighthouse and wonderfully tended beach flora, one of those special things that one sometimes stumbles upon. The Blue Ridge is also fabulous, of course. A couple of years ago, we drove Skyline Drive, then swung up to Great Falls to have dinner at Chez Francois, a wonderful country inn specializing in Alsatian dishes. It was a lovely day........

I'd suggest Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo. The San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco Bay areas used to be Paradise, but they're horribly overpopulated now.
