I agree with you that Glover has right to express views about his opposition to death penalty. I think the boycott of his movies because of his other stance is something worth considering, though I haven't attended them recently.
Something we americans need to remember about our movies is that our TV programs and our movies are what much of the rest of the world SEES and HEARS about "us" and perceives that it represents us! Our chief cultural export is our TV and movies. Think about it-how realistic a view of "us" in our daily lives really matches those images? Not much, in my family's experience!
Re-minds me of my first trip to Mexico in 1986. With a local friend we visited a mountain village to attend a wedding reception of import. The bridal couple consisted of one from the mountains marrying one from the valley. The mountain village had only 1 flush toilet (we were invited to see it about to be installed). One single truck provided the village for transportation to and fro. During the celebration, feasting and dancing going on with adults, the children sat in a windowless room, eyes pivoted on the tv which was showing an old cowboy and Indian western black and white movie. Probably mexican-indians actually in movie. Also, the first and only sign we saw as we entered the village was "Coca Cola". I experienced significant time warp at the time.
Since then I have taught classes using an impressive book of information by Cynthia Enloe called Bananas, Beaches and Bases. The title references the import of USA influence globally via our agricultural policies, tourism (now the number one industry of globe) and military.
Interesting times we live in...
