If you are going to look at a price chart for that long a time frame, it would probably be necessary to adjust for inflation. 10$ oil in 1998, after the inflation of the 1970s and 1980s, was a lot lower price (in purchasing power) than 10$ oil in, say 1965. 1965 dollars and 1998 dollars is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
