Well, those places were what I called pool halls. There were pool tables and, yes, things happened around those pool tables. My buddies would bet on how long it took for me to get in trouble with the "locals" when I went in to play pool.

I do have accounts of true pool halls where ya yell "rack" and a little ole man comes running up and racks the balls. And with a discrete poker game going in the corner, sort of off to the side so the bets could quickly be hidden when the local cops came in....
