Australia considers peacekeeping role in Afghanistan
The Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer says it is conceivable that Australia could send a small number of troops as part of a multi-national stabilisation force to prevent civil war in Afghanistan.

If Australia does send troops as part of a multi-national force, it would be in addition to Australia's commitment to the US-led campaign against terrorism.

But Mr Downer says Australia does not want a long term commitment in Afghanistan and he cannot say when or if such a contingent would leave.
