It is exceedingly wise to build checks and balances of power into a political system, and IMHO may well be the single most important reason that this country has been able to grow into the greatness it has....i.e., power has been more or less evenly divided among opposing forces, creating constant tension. Nevertheless we constantly lament that state of affairs. Republicans more or less think Democrats are idiots, and things would be far better if the Dems wouldn't stand in their way; Dems more or less think precisely the same about Republicans; and most everybody, Democrat, Republican, or neither, chastises the constant bickering and debating and blatantly political rhetoric and view it as a nuisance and an obstruction to real progress. Moreover, various opposing branches of government are seen as impediments to progress; the executive branch typically cites the legislative branch as standing in the way, the legislative branch complains about the executive, and both complain about the judicial and constantly strive to stack the judicial outcome with politically favorable judicial appointments. And the various courts never bat an eye while delivering judgements that completely wreck things the other branches of government have worked so hard to accomplish. The utter genius underlying the design of our government just leaves me awestruck. Even though they didn't invent the bipartisan political party system when they wrote the constitution, still that kind of insight into the fundamental nature of power and human beings is unprecedented and unparalleled in the history of governments. Thomas Jefferson was a genius, and truly inspired.....particularly so considering he was a participant, and had a built-in conflict of interest. I for one am very grateful. I'd say the human condition is nothing if not astonishingly ironic. Good thing none of us are really in charge. Seems evident that we wouldn't know what is good for us if it hit us in the face. JMVHO......... WS
