I would completely agree, FWIW. There is much that needs to be done. Even if the Taliban are completely vanquished in Afghanistan (and it seems they are on the verge), there are reports that many of those are now in Pakistan, along with bin Laden himself. And we may find going after them in Pakistan more difficult, since Pakistan is our ally..... we can't exactly invade them whenever we want. I am concerned that even if we completely exterminate bin Laden and all his cronies, that this will result in a euphoric sense of victory that belies the true nature of the problem and might tend to undermine our own efforts.

I am also concerned that too much of our energies will be diverted to stabilizing the political arena in Afghanistan, which seems to be one horrific quagmire, another lose-lose proposition. I think it more important that we remain determined in our goal, and turn our attention to Iraq, and neutralize that threat. And, it is not too soon to begin to put into motion a truly effective long-term solution to global terrorism. I think this may well take a generation to accomplish, since it will involve changing fundamental attitudes and perceptions, and many children of the world have already been taught that America is the devil, inherently wrong whatever it does, and it is noble to take up arms against us and constantly strive for our defeat by whatever means. Children like that are not likely to grow up to be our friends, and some of them will lead governments......
