I'm beginning to wonder if it's just me but I keep seeing
recommendations for buying real estate trusts, I look at
the charts and they are moving steadily upward, yet
yesterday afternoon, early evening, I went downtown for
the first time in a long time. Eaton's Centre. Top floor.
Empty shops. One space taken up with some make work
program paid for by govt. This is a space filler. Not
a money maker. Next three floors. Empty spaces mixed in
with regular shops. Many spaces filled with phony shops.
Retail goods (crappy paintings you usually see being
sold at flea markets) and cheap xmas gift items slapped
into spaces to try and make them look full. Garden shop.
Was waiting for ten minutes outside the garden shop. Not
one customer. I'd say this is a mall in serious trouble.
Maybe this is an anomolie but I know someone who has a
store in a mall in another city. She took in 88.00 one
day last week. Yet the newspaper reports retail sales are
up. Recommendations for real estate trusts are BUY.
I've got people who took early retirement coming in
asking for work at one third the salary they were getting
when they retired. Must just be me. It's okay. I'll shut
my eyes and lie down until everything makes sense.
