Jean Carnahan, D-Mo., urged President Bush on Saturday to help break the congressional logjam over legislation to stimulate the nation's economy. Carnahan, delivering the weekly Democratic radio address, cited low consumer confidence, worried retailers and seven million jobless as reasons for lawmakers to quickly finish negotiations over a stimulus package. "All across the country, the fires of patriotism burn brightly, while Congress smolders in indecision," she said. Debate resumed Wednesday in the Senate on a $67 billion Democratic economic package focused on aid to the unemployed - to which Democrats sought to add a 10-year, $15 billion homeland security spending package. e A $100 billion measure composed mainly of tax cuts passed the House last month. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., and Minority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., have said they need to convene talks with leaders from the GOP-dominated House and representatives of the Bush administration. Carnahan accused House Republicans of passing a "bloated" bill that would return the country to deficits and high interest rates, and contended it would be a "windfall for the wealthiest among us, but offers almost nothing to working families." Democrats' top priorities include extending unemployment benefits and increasing the amount of health insurance available to the jobless. "This season is supposed to be a time when Americans come together and give thanks. But for many families this year, Thanksgiving will be a time of uncertainty and fear about the future," Carnahan said. "There is no reason it should be this way."
