Not odd at all that the letters were hand-written. The FBI can easily determine which make and model of typewriter or computer printer was involved in a machine-generated letter, which cuts down on the potential pool of possible perpetrators (alliteration not intentional).

If the guy knows his stuff, he also knows that ink and paper contain markers, too, so if he is trying to avoid detection, he's using the most widely sold ink and paper, brands you can buy anywhere.
