I agree they'd have a hard time tracing a LaserJet, but if they wanted to badly enough, they could probably get a list of almost everyone who bought a particular LaserJet, say a LaserJet 4L, assuming they bought it new. Unless you pay cash, the stores would have some kind of record of names and addresses. And people have to buy toner cartridges when the old one is used up. They have a fairly narrow area to check in, within an hour's drive of Trenton, New Jersey. Even if they couldn't trace all LaserJet 4Ls, if they had a suspect, and he had a LaserJet 4L, he'd be in worse trouble than a guy who faked his handwriting. If nothing else, they'd know they were looking for someone with a computer. It's the proverbial needle in a haystack, but right now they are looking for a needle in many, many haystacks.
