The sky will light up Saturday night and Sunday morning with what is expected to be one of the most spectacular meteor showers in our lifetime.

"Astronomers don't think we'll see another storm like this one until the year 2099," says Robert Naeye of the Astronomy Society of the Pacific.

Thousands watch celestial light show
Leonid meteor storm gets rave reviews

Sunday, November 18, 2001

BURNABY, B.C. - Thousands of people in B.C. stayed up late Saturday night to watch the much-anticipated Leonid meteor storm.

NASA says between 700 and 1000 meteors streaked across the sky during the peak of the shower, at approximately 2 a.m. PT.

The meteors are called ‘leonids’ because they come from the constellation Leo.

In the Lower Mainland, one of the most popular places to watch the celestial display was Burnaby Mountain.

One viewer described the meteors as "little dancing fairies in the sky."

Another star struck viewer said it was "very awesome (with) so many lights all over the place."
