The reasoning is that at least for those two we know exactly what symbols are being used to calculate the numbers. For the NYSE, everyone has different symbol lists that are considered as being a part of the NYSE - same as for calculating the A/D numbers. Based on that, I end up just using the NDX and SPX Bullish percent numbers to get a read, especially since I mostly focus on the larger cap stocks anyway or just trade these two indices through proxies like QQQ, SPY, Rydex dynamic funds etc.
