Actually, so does Judaism for the last, well, at least a thousand years (probably closer to 1300 years). What are the mechanisms allowing these non hierarchial religions to evolve with time, without being splintered into a thousand fractions? I must admit that in my post, I conveyed the wrong rationale, what I should have probably said is that Islam, when it lacks a strong central hand (as during the time of the various caliphates) may be prone to egomaniacs hijacking the religion itself.
