In Afghan war it is yes, the sides can be changed or switched at the last moment, once the first bullet is fired the sides cannot not be changed. That is exactly what is happening in Kandahar and Kunduz. Mulah Omar is telling the Pushtuns , wait and see what NA is doing, the negotiations are on, but once they decide to fight the honor demands that last drop of blood should be drawn. Omar is towards that end..
