Beamer - Re: "Two things that are much improved over the K7 are the Branch Predictor Unit and the Translational Look-aside Buffer. From what I could gather, these improvements should help AMD in getting better scores with transactional processing tests, such as TCP."

For transaction processing, Interrupt handling speed and context switching speed should be the critical factors - processing NEW instruction streams efficiently while also handling "current" instruction streams.

TLB and branch predictor improvements would not - in most cases - increase context switching - instead, they improve performance where a single process contains multiple branches depending upon prior results from earlier on in the thread.

Memory latency reduction will help, however.

Beamer - Re: "Assuming that AMD can get the product out by the end of next year, do you think it can hit their aggressive targets for performance?"

How long has the AthWiper MP been out?

What impact has that had on AMD's position in the server business?

The only people who use it are those that hate anything with an Intel chip in it and get all lathered up by purchasing a dualie AthWiper- and NOT BECAUSE IT IMPROVES productivity in a server environment.

One crash of the unstable AthWiper servers and you wipe out any possible productivity improvement that the cheaper price of the AThWipers brings to the party.
