Higher Speed Mobile Internet Trial Underway in Korea

(19/11/2001, BWCS Staff) According to reports in the Korean press SK Telecom has launched a trial version of its new cdma2000 1xEV-DO (Evolution Data Only) mobile platform. The latest system can transmit data at speeds of up to 2.4Mbps – around ten times as fast as the already popular cdma2000-1x.

SK Telecom’s trial which offers video streaming is being conducted in Seoul and some nearby cities. The operator believes that full commercial services will be ready for launch by March 2002. This is two months ahead of its original schedule, announced in June of this year, when it thought a May start date was more realistic. SK Telecom now says that the cdma2000-1xEV-DO service should be available in over 20 South Korean cities by the time the football World Cup kicks off in the summer of 2002. According to the Ministry of Information and Communication, by the end of the first quarter of 2001 there were just over 19 million mobile customers using their handsets to access the internet in South Korea
