Personally, I prefer puts to shorts because the maximum loss is capped at 100%. And unlike shorts, maximum gains can be more than 100%.

OTOH, I tend to take profits too soon on my options, which is a problem with me, not the notion of playing options. I've been willing to settle for profits that are not commensurate with the risks I take by getting into the positions to begin with. A very bad habit I'm trying to rid myself of.

Even with that, I tend to make money overall in them and sometimes get some bases-loaded home runs that way.
