The problem with the "better christmas than expected theory" is the increasing numbers of layoffs. I think consumer sentiment will dip again and people will be worried about spending money.

On the other hand, good progress in the war on terror and a tendency of people to reward themselves and their families after all of the frightening events of the fall will help spending. Also some are canceling travel plans and may tend to spend the money on gifts instead.

Hows that for an equivocal answer?
