The best I could do in 1974 was make monthly transfers from fixed to variable accounts in a 403b account, reaching 100% variable towards the end of 1974. By midsummer the next year I was up 40%. Then things got boring. But my gains 1982-1985 had the unfortunate effect of making me think I was a wizard. There's nothing so disastrous as to become convinced of your own genius. That's the wisdom of diversification: you are always LOSING on something, and that keeps you on your toes. I think this can be applied to other areas in life.
