Here is a letter Grassfire.net received from Michael Warnken, our contact on the ground in Santa Barbara who headed up a victorious initiative to protect the Scouts in his community. Michael led an effort to draft, bring to a vote and pass the "Youth Anti-Discrimination Act." The initiative came about after anti-Scouts forces on the county board passed an initiative that effectively censured the local BSA council. Michael gathered over 23,000 petitions to get the anti-discrimination act on the ballot, and in November 2001 it passed! Here is Michaels’ field report: Michael C. Warnken Chief Proponent Friends of the Boy Scouts Youth Anti-Discrimination Act Santa Barbara County November 14, 2001 Dear Grassfire.net, It is my job now to crow and have everyone else that we possibly can get to crow as well. We won our initiative. The Board of Supervisors passed our resolution unanimously. As you may well know, last March the Local Board of Superintendents Passed a Resolution Censuring the BSA for having discriminatory practices that were not the compatible with Santa Barbara County. I took up the effort to overturn the resolution by taking it to a vote of the people. The county did everything to stop me. They even sued me. We re-wrote the initiative and collected over 23,000 signatures in this county to support the Boy Scouts. Today, the Board had the choice of either putting it on the ballot or adopting it. The woman that wrote the resolution would have been up for election at the same time the initiative would have been on the ballot. They chose to adopt it instead to save themselves. During the two readings of the initiative, They (The three supes) did everything that they could to make it look like the initiative was less than it was. They even renamed it by using the liberal county attorney. But we shined the light through and the Supes that passed the resolution censuring the Boy Scouts all ate crow and you could see it on their faces as they voted for it. We won and this is a huge victory. It is a victory for the freedom of Religion, The freedom of association and the freedom for parents to choose the leaders and role-models for their children. I want you to get an idea of how big a win this is. Santa Barbara is a very liberal county. So liberal that one supervisor Gail Marshall fired a man for doing the pledge of allegiance at a county meeting! Our congress person is Lois Capps, a liberal. Our Assembly person is Hanna-Beth Jackson Liberal Dem. Our State Senator Jack O'Connell is a liberal. 4 of our 5 supervisors are democrats and the area is 55% registered democrat and 43% Registered Republican! Our initiative won in a liberal district. We had polling numbers that said that the liberals supported us 60%!!! The North county (which is mostly conservative) supported us 80-90+%. We now need to figure out how to tell the World!!!! I hope that you can let everyone know. I hope that this can help to give force to the congressional bill that is being considered in Congress to support the scouts and their access to schools. The Boy Scouts are a fantastic organization and they need to be promoted for all that they do for our youth. Sincerely, Michael C.
