Zardoz, you could well be right and the biggest shorters will be those boyz (Anglogold, Barrick) whose gold output is hedged.

Thus the unhedged producers ie Newmont, Normandy, Franco Nevada, Goldfields will have to bite the bullet and their stock prices will be adversely affected. The hedged producers can, presumably, ride out a fall in POG.

Thus, as the gold price moves down, the takeover bid from Newmont for Normandy becomes increasingly unattractive and that from Anglogold becomes more attractive.

Eventually, as the Anglogold offer becomes worth more than that from Newmont, the Normandy management can be shown-up as being part of a "conspiracy" to "defraud" the Normandy shareholders of their just returns who will then, hopefully for Anglogold, express a vote of 'no-confidence' in the management.
