Hello Ike. I agree with this assessment. In a world where macho is demonstrated by one's ability to out-cruel one another, respect is not obtainable through reason, but only through force. Sad but true.

The B-52s certainly had an enormous impact and the planes recently sent to Uzbekhistan, which are precise targetters with scads of munitions, will also prove disheartening. Which leaves only the cruelest of the cruel hiding in the mtns near Kandahar, with the Al Quaida leadership.

They wanted it on their terms, certain that they could beat America one-on-one, face-to-face, mano-et-mano. They will get their wish, to some degree now. But I'm certain the aircraft will also play a role, with cave-busting bombs. I presume we will see some casualties on both sides and the hunt may take a week or two.

Tough terrain or not, the 30 square miles is hardly a winter-long engagement. We will soon see how our men stack up against the cruelest, fiercest Taliban soldiers of all. I hope it disheartens all observers and lets them understand the US did not gain its freedoms by cheap frills, but earned it by being the deadliest when threatened.

And kept its soul by being among the most compassionate when the cease-fires hold.

And elsewhere, extremists must share one concern: are they next? In Iraq? In Indonesia? In Ireland?

It is a great credit to Musharraf that he has put the best foot of Pakistan forward in this struggle and I hope your countrymen hold him in high esteem in response, and that Pakistan flourishes.

Among that which I gave thanks for on our Thanksgiving is the hopeful, wise voice and good soul I find whenever I see your words here, Ike.

Peace & joy to you & yours;

-Kevin
